A Lovely Family Session

February 6, 2013 by Jessica 7 Comments

B Family Session

It’s the month of love and what a better place to see love in action than in a family. I had the pleasure of capturing this family together back in December. It was so much fun! They were so natural and made my job super easy. Aren’t they all just gorgeous? I’ll leave you with a few of my faves here. I need to get some things done tonight as I am a little behind on some obligations/projects. And guess what? I have a pattern out to testers right now!!!! About time, right?

So I’m just getting started with photography. I took classes in college (before the days of digital lol) and I’ve taken some online classes recently. While I have had many families volunteer for me to practice and even some request my services for payment, I’m very intimidated by “professional photographers”. I even had one tell me to stop taking pictures because I am not a professional and I’m a disservice to the field. I love doing, natural light photo shoots, have no desire to do weddings, just laid back, fun, capturing life’s moments. How did you get started? What kind of camera do you use? And did you invest in Photoshop right away or do you use something else? I really want to move forward with this, but not at the expense of making people mad ๐Ÿ˜‰ Do you have any suggestions? Love your blog. I just found it, looking for headband tutorials and have fallen in love!!!!

Here is my two cents ๐Ÿ˜‰ I say we all start somewhere. I also think that sometimes you just need to jump in there no matter where you are. That’s how we learn. If we wait around forever until we feel “perfect” we might not ever begin. I began enjoying photography because of my craft blog. I have just studied things myself (and still do) to master my camera/lenses/editing/etc. It takes time to kind of find your style too. I began just taking pics of my friends and when I felt confident enough and people liked what I did, I started offering it for a fee when people asked. We are military and move a lot, so I don’t feel like trying to do anything like this as a job job yet. I just bought a Canon 7d, upgrading from a Canon rebel xs, which is what I used for these pictures. It’s worth it. I always felt so limited with the rebel and feel much more comfortable offering my services now with a better camera. I want a Canon Mark II or III, but after researching, I wanted to use my funds to buy better lenses as well, as they really make a huge difference. I still use my nifty fifty (50 mm F/1.8) but also invested in a 85 mm f/1.8 and am saving up for more. I currently use Lightroom 3 to start off with (really good for correcting white balance if off and shadows and such) and then edit in PSE using various actions I like (my favorite are from Paint the Moon). I might try Photoshop one day, but I don’t feel at a place where I have the time to learn it and don’t feel like putting my money into it yet. I believe it will be worth it, but not quite yet for me. I’m happy and I feel confident in my style ๐Ÿ™‚ Don’t worry about making people mad because you will no matter what. Do what makes you happy and do your best! We are blessed to live in a free country where we can choose our career paths and do what we love ๐Ÿ™‚ Maybe see if you can intern with a local professional photographer for a few months? I would say the business aspect of it is going to take up your time the most if you do this full time, so best to see how others do that part too.

I have this idea for Valentines decor on our mantl I have this idea for Valentines decor on our mantle and these fun confetti hearts I made are going to be a part of it. You can find a tutorial to make your own from @amanda_evanston . A few of the items I used in mine were: shredded Anthropologie shopping bag (and cut up the fabric handle too), cut up newspaper, hole punched card stock, fringe from yarn, cut up gold circle confetti, crinkled gift filler paper, etc... It was fun using all kinds of random things ๐Ÿ˜Š
