A Top with Ukrainian Heritage

My mother-in-law’s mother-in-law was from the Ukraine and was a sewer. She left behind a few pieces of her embroidery work when she passed from this earth and my mother-in-law had kept them tucked away for some years. We went up to Virginia to visit family last summer and I inherited those special pieces along with some other sewing notions. I love embroidery work and this was extra special since it was made by my daughter’s great grandmother. I knew that I wanted to create something special using those pieces. This little top for miss E was the first to be made.

The embroidered piece was really small, so I wanted to show case it. I placed it at the top of a linen fabric to let it pop. I based the top’s shape on another top that miss E has and kept it very simple. I did make it a little too large (she was napping and I just went on sewing instead of waiting….) but I fixed it by taking it in on the sides and holding it in place with embroidery thread. I like the little accent it adds.

I happened to have the pre-made blue ruffles in my stash. They matched perfectly and were easy to add on as straps.

This girl has grown some since I first made this and it looks like I might need to extend the top a little. We have been having some warm days so I know we will still get plenty of use out of it before she completely outgrows it. -Jess

Oh Jess, it’s adorable! And how special to have something that was made by her great grandmother. It’s been too long since I have visited your little spot – I was thinking about you last week, and wondering how you were doing. I think I need to check the settings on my feed – because I’m not getting updates from you any more.
Righto, I’m off to look at what else you have been up to!
