A Vintage Birthday

Birthday Vintage Style

Miss E had her birthday a few days after miss J. She turned 2. And then decided to grow up a lot. We had to move her to a big girl bed because she would no longer not climb out of her crib. She started picking up a few words a day. And she just began to grow up, if that makes sense. It was like she fully crossed into toddlerhood. Funny how it just seems to happen sometimes. No progression. Just happens in an instant. We just had a family birthday party for her, but miss J helped me make it special with some decorations.

We used things that we had around the house. Vintage lace adorned the wall with some gold tissue paper pom poms that I had from a current wall decorating. I took the yellow pom pom flowers off of our photo chalkboard and put them in a vintage vase. The place mats were a fabulous thrifted find that I have later plans for and the tablecloth is a vintage one that I scored off of Ebay years ago.

I made a two layer chocolate cake with buttercream frosting. Yum. We love cake around here. Big sis found the pink crown in the dress up bin and thought it would be good to use instead of the hats I had. I agreed. A crown for the birthday princess was perfect.

Miss E didn’t really get the candle thing at all though. It was kind of funny. Even after trying to show her, she just didn’t care. Oh well. Maybe next year.

We filled our tummies with sugar and our hearts with love in celebration for this precious little girl. She’s my goofy one and always gets me to smile. Happy and blessed to have both of my sweet girls!

A Birthday in New Orleans

Birthday decor in the hotel room.

Our girls both had their birthdays this summer. Miss J was first and turned 6 on me. I can’t believe she’s 6.

The birthday princess in Anthropologie. She loves it there as much as I do.

This year she asked to stay in a hotel for her birthday instead of have a party. I was totally down with that. We decided to use it as an opportunity to see New Orleans with the girls (my hubby has to go down there a lot so he’s been many times already). We had to make it a short trip, but that was plenty for us.

We went to the zoo, the aquarium, the mall, a cute restaurant for breakfast, and had lots of fun at the hotel.

It was a nice break and a good time for our family. We usually save our trips for visiting family, but we are trying to do more just ourselves to explore new places while the Coast Guard has us moving around. Might as well experience all we can while we are in different places.

Since this trip was her birthday present, we only got her one gift that we had been talking about for a year. A sewing machine. Well, actually we gave her a picture and are hoping to go get one soon lol.

Miss J started school back up again. It’s a little more quiet than normal. Although miss E definitely makes herself known. Along with getting into a new school routine, we are prepping for a family wedding coming up soon! I’m making flower girl dresses and taking the pictures, so I can’t wait to share all of that.

Birthday Party Time at the Farm

Untitled

Now for the final birthday post :) So, for those who haven’t read the other posts, both of my daughters had birthdays this summer. In fact, their birthdays are only four days apart. Since my youngest turned one and we were going to be visiting family in Virginia, I decided to just have on big party for them both.

Untitled

It was so big because, well, we both have a lot of  family there and we also wanted to invite friends. It was kind of like a big reunion in a way.

Untitled

I wanted to have it at a place that would accomodate everyone and found a wonderful farm to use. They let you rent a spot and include a lot of fun farm activities.

Untitled

It was a hot day but so much fun!

Untitled

I used burlap in a lot of the decor since the sit down part was in a barn. I made table runners, a thank you banner for the favor bag bucket, and a big happy birthday sign with burlap.

Untitled

For a simple streamer, I just tied on strips of fabric to a thick twine. The ceiling had all kinds of nails for hanging stuff on, so it was super easy to put up. I also added some to miss E’s high chair.

Untitled

They already had all the lights up and all. I also bought random flowers from a local grocery store and spread them out in mason jars. That was it on decorations. Simple and quick!

Untitled

Miss E was so good and hung out in her stroller at the beginning while everything was put together.

Untitled

I tried to get a picture with them, but miss J wasn’t really into it. She wanted to be playing with her friends :)

Untitled

I aslo tried to get a pic of them together, but then miss E didn’t want anything to do with pictures. Oh well. We’ll take what we an get. (I did make their dresses too. See more info on that here.)

Untitled

For the smash cake, I just used the leftover batter and made a two layer cake and covered it in pink frosting (I just tinted regular buttercream frosting).

Untitled

And then I made a bunch of cupcakes (talked about all of that here).

Untitled

I was glad they held up as good as they did in the heat.

Untitled

We did stick the ones with the cream cheese frosting in a fridge though. The others wouldn’t fit.

Since miss J was really the one who would be able to do candles, we just let her do it.

Untitled

I can’t believe I have a 5 year old now!

Untitled

This was her first sweet thing like this ever.

Untitled

She dug in! But she didn’t eat too much. She doesn’t seem to have such a sweet tooth like her big sis does.

Untitled

I think one of miss J’s favorite things was the petting farm.

Untitled

She loved the chicken coop especially.

Untitled

Here she was making a nest for them ;)

Untitled

They also had pony rides for the kids. So much fun!

Untitled

And one of my favorite things were the peacocks roaming around. They came in at the end checking things out. I’m so glad we were able to have this for them, especially miss J. Her past few birthdays have been away from family so she was so excited about this!

On another note, it seems like the hurricane isn’t going to be so bad for us in this part of Louisiana. I just keep looking though because you just never know with these things. They still have school cancelled, so we shall see. We are praying for all of you who are really having to deal with the mess from it.

“Cupcake Mixology”

Cupcakes

Continuing on with my daughters’ combined birthday party, today I want to share about the cupcakes I made. I have to say, I had a lot of fun making these. I think what made it so fun was making so many different kinds. It was really quite simple too! I first learned about “cupcake mixology” from a Beautiful Mess here.

Cupcakes

I had never even thought about taking a basic cake mix and then making a few changes to create a few different kinds from that one base. They made their cupcakes from scratch, but I just used boxed mixes to make it easier on me. We were out of town for this and I wanted to make things as simple as possible. That’s where this next post from Love From the Oven came into play.

Cupcakes

I found hers when looking for cupcake recipes I could use in this cupcake mixology that were different than some of the ones used on ABM. I wanted them to be catered more to my daughter’s taste ;) Plus, I used the formula she has for the boxed mixes with adding mayonaise. It worked like a charm!

Cupcakes

In the end, I ended up with the following flavors: PB& J, Peanut Butter Monster, and my version of plain classic cupcake from ABM here. Then I made the Oreo and the Andes mint one from LFTO here. And finally, I found the lemonade with cream cheese frosting recipe here.

Cupcakes

I of course didn’t do each one exactly the same, but pretty much.

Cupcakes

I will admit, the pb&j was the least liked! lol. We had a bunch of them left over, but almost all of the cupcakes were gone at the end!

Cupcakes

It was also hot, so the icing kind of melted and so did some of the candies, but they made it and were a delicious addition to the party. Anyone else done this with cupcake mix before? I love the variety!

*PS: We live in Louisiana and are waiting for the hurricane to come to our part. If you leave a question or email me, I will get to you as soon as possible as long as we still have power and internet connection :)

*PSS: Got the little chalkboards from JoAnn’s
