Headbands with Buttons for Face Masks

April 1, 2020 by Jessica 15 Comments

One of my most popular patterns on my blog, the double sided headband pattern, is now being used in such a great way! I was first made aware of this project by Stephanie of Steph Jacobson Designs (see the headband she made here). With the spread of COVID-19 there are many who have to use a face mask constantly and the masks with ear elastics can really irritate the skin when worn so much. These headbands are helping provide relief from this. I have added these pictures and more to the original post (linked above) so you can have an idea of where to attach the buttons if you would like to make some for those who could use something like this. If you are not a sewer, you can attach buttons to already made headbands as well.

Thank you to everyone who is doing what they can to help out during this time. No act is too small! We are all in this together and you are all in my prayers. -jess

Is there a way to purchase 3 of these headbands. I an hard of hearing and can’t hear without my hearing aids. I also have glasses. I can’t find facemasks that work for me. I lost my thumb while compounding drugs in the medical field so I can’t see. Please let me know. Thank you.

Hi Lisa 🙂 I cannot commit to anything at the moment, but I am positive there should be some on Etsy. I allow makers to create items to share/sell using any of my patterns/tutorials and I know quite a few have told me they would be listing some on Etsy. If you search for “headband with buttons” I bet you can find some pretty ones that you like 🙂 I’m glad that this idea will be able to help you!

Thank you for this great tutorial! I have one question: can you tell us where to sew on the buttons? And what is a good size button to use?

Hi Judy 🙂 If you look at the beginning pictures I have the ones I did held up by a ruler. On the adults, I added the button so it’s about 3″ up from the seam where the top connects to the elastic casing. I have a few friends who have shared pictures wearing them and it seemed to be a great spot for them too. As for a button size, I just grabbed some out of my stash, but as long as elastic can go around it, it will be good. A previous comment suggested using buttons that are at least 3/4″ in diameter.

Thank you so, so much for posting this. I have two nieces who work in hospital emergency rooms, and their ears are raw from the masks. I’m going to make a bunch of these to send along with the fabric masks. I feel better knowing there is some small way I can help.

Thank you so much for all that you are doing!!! I suggest looking on Etsy or finding a headband at a store that is still open (like Target) and sewing on some buttons real quick if you have the time. Or better yet, if you have a friend that can do it ask them lol

I’ve been adding buttons to headbands and have picked up a few (hopefully) helpful hints:
I’ve found that placing the button holes approx 4 inches from the back seam is a good placement.
And that buttons should be at least 3/4 inches in diameter.

Just started making these to go with the masks I’ve made for healthcare workers in our community. I’m wondering, if the 2nd set of buttons on the “inside” is irritating- pressing on head?
Love this pattern and your fabrics even more!
    Thank you.
    Stay well.

Hello, that is a good question! It is definitely not something you need to do. In fact, most people making these in batches are just doing one button. I wanted to try on both sides to see how it was. I personally couldn’t even tell the buttons were there. I have sent a few out with the double buttons and all the recipients have had no issues with it. But, do what you feel is best 🙂

Easter and Spring Break are now behind us, but it Easter and Spring Break are now behind us, but it was such a good time! For this past Easter I really wanted to make egg aprons for miss E and my other young nieces and nephew that are here. I looked at a bunch of pictures and just kind of figured it out myself, but I made four aprons that can hold up to 10 eggs. Thankfully I had enough fabric already to make them 🙌 It won’t be too long until my youngest will be too old for some of this, so I am trying to squeeze it all in before that happens 💛
