Simple Bathroom Makeover (almost done!)

April 22, 2018 by Jessica 4 Comments

A Simple Bathroom Makeover | happy together
I have been working really hard lately to finish up some projects I had committed to and this simple bathroom makeover is getting so close to being done! And yes, I’m calling this a simple bathroom makeover because most everything was kept and it was done by me, a regular diy’er, and others with little experience in this type of thing. The last few things left (new flooring/baseboards) are things that are out of my capabilities on such a large level so those are being hired out. But I’m extremely proud of what has been accomplished so far and thankful for all the help I have had during this process. This makeover has happened in two bathrooms at my church and is almost done in another two, but I’m focusing on this one for sharing purposes. They all are the same colors and style, but the women’s bathroom is more pleasant for pictures 😉 I seriously can’t believe how different it looks with just a few changes!

This is the before picture. Not horrible, but not terribly inviting and the lighting was not really pleasing for a bathroom. When I was asked to present design ideas for the bathrooms, I was told that the flooring was definitely going to change, but what other changes could I come up with. I sat down and really tried to think of what could be done easily, within my skills, and keep as much as was there as possible. I was inspired by bathrooms I had seen on pinterest and drew up this design:

My plan was to keep the existing cabinets but add new hardware and also wood to create a shaker style, add a new countertop, add a backsplash, new mirrors, lights if possible, fresh paint, and wood ledge to place items on. I also had some ideas for how to deal with the hand soap since the wall ones wouldn’t work for this type of set up. As you can see below, I did end up changing one thing on my original plan: instead of wood countertops I did a faux concrete on top of what was there. It made it so nothing had to be removed and saved a lot of time and money.

The very first thing an amazing group of volunteers did was paint the walls in Sherwin Williams Alabaster (SW 7008). Then the very first thing I did was buy some 2’x2′ and 2’x4′ lauan plywood boards and rip them down to 2.5″ strips. Then I lightly sanded the doors and used wood glue and my nail gun to put them in place. I used wood filler on the nail holes and in any seams that had a gap. Then I caulked around the edges where the wood met the doors because the doors were curved on the edges. This just helped fill in that space. Not a necessity, but I thought it made it look a little more finished.

Then came all the painting! If you are doing a lot of doors, make sure to mark which ones go where so when you go to put them back on it doesn’t take forever. We used an enamel paint in Sherwin Williams color Black Magic (SW 6991). I had a lot of helpers with painting these, as I do not have a sprayer. I found this tutorial useful for getting a nice finish even though we used a brush and roller. A Simple Bathroom Makeover | happy together
I also added some trim to the side of the cabinets to continue that Shaker cabinet look.

The hardware added a lot to the cabinets! The top “drawers” are not really drawers, but adding the pulls (we used these) makes it look so finished. New knobs (here) on the doors also helped update the look and they all matched the sink faucets. My sweet friends installed all of these for me while I worked on the backsplash. It was such a big help!

The countertop transformation took a total of three days, but I felt it was easier and more cost effective than the wood option. I read so many tutorials and went for it. It took three coats to get it all covered and I’m happy with how it turned out. The picture below is after the first coat.

After the faux concrete was all dried and sealed I went to work on the backsplash. I used these inexpensive subway tiles and this grout. It was my first time working with a dark grout and I found that this stuff is messy! lol But it looks beautiful. I just suggest doing smaller sections to make cleaning easier. It seemed to dry faster to me.

When all of that was finally done, I added this pretty wood ledge. It is a 2″x4″x10′ with a 1″x4″x10′ piece behind it. I screwed the 1″x4″ to the 2″x4″ first and then used liquid nails and a nail gun to keep it in place on the wall. Oh, and I stained it with Minwax Early American and sealed with three layers of polycrylic semi gloss before putting it on the wall.

For the soap, we decided to go with soap pumps by the sink. It really takes the look up a notch and I totally did this hack where you add the hose underneath to connect to a large bottle of soap versus the small bottle that comes with these. This is the soap pump and the hose we used. They are working great so far.

The greenery all came from Hobby Lobby and I put one of the plants in a clay pot. I found a clear vase in the back for the fern plant.

I also added two 4″x6″ pictures frames so they can put in announcements or holiday themed printables, etc.

Lastly, the awesome electricians were able to wire in these lights (which if you wait for a sale, they have gotten as low as just over $30/each!) for us and the mirrors are from Target. They are the most cost effective for this type of metal mirror I have found, and I scoured the internet a long time! I am not sure when the flooring and baseboards will be done, but I wanted to go ahead and share this part of it. When that part is done, I will share a final reveal. I also plan to do a more in depth post next on my experience with the faux concrete countertops, so be on the lookout for that if you are interested. And always remember, a little change can go a long way in making a simple bathroom makeover.

Church Coffee Shop Makeover

At the beginning of the year I embarked on my biggest diy project yet: our church coffee shop makeover. Even though it took quite a while to finish up, I’m so happy with how it came out. It was fun designing and being creative with using what we already had on hand so we could be wise with our budget for it. I’m very thankful for the many people who helped make this a reality with their time and donations. It’s now a nice area to be used by the church for fellowship, classes/meetings, and provides an area for the many people who come in during the week seeking help through counseling/food bank/other needs/etc.

Before I get into the details, let’s take a look at the before. It was a very nice spot that they had redone when the church first moved into this building. For some background, the building was originally a grocery store. Then another church bought it and started to work on the interior to make it more functional for church purposes. And after they had it, they moved on to a different building and our church moved in and began using it. It still has a lot of work to be done to be used to it’s full potential, but we are getting there. Here is the before (pics courtesy of Clark Miller) :

As you can see, one of the most noticeable transformations was taking that wall down and opening it up. I was told this used to be a children’s area, which is why I’m sure the wall was there (to keep them in there lol). But as a coffee shop, the wall was a hindrance. If people were standing in the entrance, it was hard to get in. Now there is much more flow and it feels a lot more welcoming. We painted the whole area to brighten it up. I ended up going with Sherwin Williams Icy Avalanche (HGSW1497) in eggshell for the walls and Sherwin Williams Carbonzied in semi-gloss (HGSW1481) for the baseboards and cabinets. Since this church has a lot of foot traffic, we noticed the white baseboards on the inside would look dingy and dirty real quick. Painting the baseboards a darker color hides a lot more of the wear and tear.

For the counter area we did a few simple things to take it up a notch. We painted the cabinets, which thankfully went perfect with the main counter tops so there was no need to replace them, but we did paint the back counter tops with special paint just for that since they were red. Someone had some of this paint they never used and it ended up being a great match to the overall color scheme. FIY, the special counter top paint stinks horribly! So if you ever do this, be prepared for that. We had the walls covered in this wood that was actually old shelving from in the back of the church. I gave it a good sanding to get rid of a lot of the scuff marks and then gave it a coat of polycrylic to protect it from food and drink splashes. We had these lights from Lowes installed to give some more ambient light which I spray painted them black to match. They changed the name of the shop to Fifteen Fifty-One, which is the address number of the church, so I created a new logo (using a template from creative market) to update it. To get it on the wall, I used a projector to project the image, traced it with a pencil, and then painted it in.

I used premade chalkboard panels from Home Depot for the chalkboards and Nekoda Derouen framed them with wood and put them in place. We stained wood to create shelves to hold some of the supplies and I spray painted galvanized piping/flanges/caps to hold them in place (here is a great tutorial on all that).

To help with the customer flow, I made an order here sign to place above the counter. I simply stained some wood, created the letters from vinyl on my Cricut Explore, and drilled some holes to hang it with rope.

We also decided to make a large chalkboard menu. This was on the large side so I actually used thin wood panels that I painted with chalkboard paint. Then Nekoda put these together as well and framed them and Marybeth Anderson did the amazing chalk design. For the next little corner, I had the idea to create a more comfy and casual sitting area. Nekoda went and found these wicker shelves in church storage and added legs to create benches. He reused tops from other old benches to go on top and a lovely volunteer covered them in a drop cloth for us. The tables were old stools that he cut down and added new tops and painted. I found the metal stools at Hobby Lobby and helped make a bunch of the pillows to go with it. I also added some metal magazine holders so people can have something to look at when they are sitting here.

The “gather” word was another word that I projected on the wall, traced, and painted. Such an easy project with a big impact! And since I have had so many requests for the font used, I have included what I have. This word doc, Gather , with the word on it. Someone else created the word in a phone app and I have no clue what the font it, but at least with this printable you can at least use it to project on the wall. Beside that area is what I call the “testimony wall.” I wanted a place where we could share pictures, stories, and encouraging quotes/verses. I was inspired by a board idea I found on pinterest. The words “tell”, “story”, and on the word bubble, were all made from vinyl. I found the wood “your” letters from Target and painted the sides of them, and then Nekoda made those word bubbles for me. I filled in the boards with all kinds of things, but many of the printables I used were from this site.

The other side of the coffee shop needed a little love too, so Clark designed these and we had engineer prints made and framed them.

For a few final touches, Nekoda made this barn door to replace the old one and an awesome trashcan cover.

All the tables used were also old tables found in the church and made over or made from scratch by Nekoda and the beautiful new flooring was installed by awesome volunteers. I still can’t believe it’s all done, but it is and functions perfectly for what we need right now. I’m currently working on the parent’s room now and can’t wait to share that. I installed my first ever board and batten wall there! Now I’m going to do one in my own home haha. Oh, and if you follow me on instagram you saw that there will be a new {free!} girls dress pattern releasing soon, so be on the lookout for that soon.

Easter and Spring Break are now behind us, but it Easter and Spring Break are now behind us, but it was such a good time! For this past Easter I really wanted to make egg aprons for miss E and my other young nieces and nephew that are here. I looked at a bunch of pictures and just kind of figured it out myself, but I made four aprons that can hold up to 10 eggs. Thankfully I had enough fabric already to make them 🙌 It won’t be too long until my youngest will be too old for some of this, so I am trying to squeeze it all in before that happens 💛
