Girl’s Farmhouse Style Bedroom

It’s official. I have one room in our house “finished.” A girl’s farmhouse style bedroom. And it feels good! Most of you know we bought our very first house last summer and I have been loving being able to make it ours. So this first finished room belongs to my oldest daughter. She really loves farms and animals so we worked together to create a room full of the things she likes. It started off as a rather bland room with a bland tanish color on the walls. My daughter wanted an aqua color so we went to the store and she picked out the color Aloe by Sherwin Williams. It looks a lot more blue in her room than it does in pictures and even in the paint can, but she was still happy with it.

My husband put together the headboard for me. We used this DIY Barn Door Headboard Tutorial as our guide. We made ours a little smaller and didn’t connect it with the middle pieces but followed most of it. We did make sure to secure this to the wall like they did so no accidents happen.

The rug came from Wayfair and I got a fabulous deal on it. I have actually bought a few rugs from that site for our home when they have sales. I made the bedskirt from a canvas drop cloth. You can get a 12 x 15 ft one for around $31 and it is so much fabric! The one I got didn’t even have any seams and I have a lot of it leftover. The white quilt is the raw edge quilt in white from Target and so are the tan geo patchwork toss pillows.

I wanted to find her a metal bed with that farmhouse feel and went with this black metal frame from Walmart. We live in small town kind of area so I do a lot of shopping online as you can tell haha.

I found these farmhouse style galvanized wall lights at Lowes and used this how to turn a hard wired light fixture into a plug in tutorial to make it a plug in. I also spray painted them black. We used a candelabra base switch cord (found at Lowes) because I couldn’t find a plain one and we just had to cut the light bulb part off to get to the wires.

The simple switch makes it easy for my little one to turn the lights off and on. She loves to read at night and these lights help provide a warmer not as bright light to have on during those night time reads.

I added some wall things on her level to use that have been perfect for her. The metal book holder came from Home Goods and the chalkboard is from Hobby Lobby.

I found the horse paint by number at a local shop two summers ago and it looks so pretty on her wall. The cows is a card print of a painting done by my sister Christy of Front Porch Studio. I really wanted this to be a colorful farmhouse feel and it is that for sure! All the color really made this one window room a lot brighter and happier.

The clothes hamper also came from Home Goods. The dresser is one of those “we don’t have much money and need a cheap dresser” kind of moments lol. It’s really beat up but until I find the right one I’m looking for it’s staying! It did used to have wood knobs the same color as the veneer top but I switched those out for these simple black ones and it upped the style.

It’s a really short dresser so I also added some casters to the bottom for more style and height. I ended up splitting a lot of the particle board when doing this because I used screws that were too long, so lesson learned. At least you can’t see all that.

The round mirror was a find from Marshalls. I wanted to find a bigger one but I got tired of looking for one and this one works good enough.

The cattle feed burlap piece is from Hobby Lobby and the j is from Anthropologie a while back.

My animal lover has a hermit crab tank in her room and it fits perfectly on this little shelf. The shelf was a handmade piece by my daughter’s first grade teacher’s husband. They gifted it to us and I painted it this coral color. It has been such a good piece for us. It used to house my printer but now works perfect in her room.

I used three prints from Minted to add some horse art to the walls too (left to right: all is quiet, {can’t find this one so it might be sold out}, what lies ahead).

And this isn’t for style, but I just wanted to show where all the toys live haha. They are here! I have found that having certain spaces for her things makes it easier for her to put them away. We also have two plastic bins under her bed that hold her toys.

And even though we might not live on a farm like she wanted, she can look out her window onto a farm. Now her little sister wants her room to be done (with flowers, ponies, and unicorns!). Sounds fun right? -jess
